Agartala, December 2, 2025: The Cardiology Department of AGMC & GBP Hospital has achieved a landmark success with the implantation of its first leadless pacemaker, saving the life of a critically ill 71-year-old patient.

The patient was admitted in an extremely critical condition, suffering from complete heart block, intraparenchymal brain hemorrhage due to traumatic injury, and septic shock. Faced with multiple life-threatening complications, a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Medicine ICU, and Cardiology worked together to stabilize the patient over several days.

In a historic first for the hospital, cardiologists successfully implanted a leadless pacemaker—a device no larger than a coin—directly into the heart through a vein. Unlike traditional pacemakers, which require chest incisions and wired connections to the heart, this innovative device reduces infection risks and accelerates recovery.

Following the procedure, the patient’s condition improved significantly and he is now stable.

Senior cardiologists hailed the achievement as a milestone in modern healthcare. “Critical patients often demand solutions beyond conventional methods. This success reflects the commitment, expertise, and teamwork of all departments involved. It is truly a proud moment for the medical fraternity,” said a senior consultant.

The medical team was led by Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, Assistant Professor and Consultant Cardiologist, who also heads the Cardiology Department. He was joined by Dr. Rakesh Das, Consultant Cardiologist, and Dr. Manna Bhattacharya, Cardiologist. Supporting them were junior doctors Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, and Dr. Prantik Roy. The Cath Lab nursing team included Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, and Titiksha Majumdar, while Kishan Roy served as the Echo Technician and Sanjay Ghosh as the Cath Technician.

Hospital leadership expressed gratitude to every medical professional involved in the life-saving effort, emphasizing that the breakthrough opens new horizons in treating severe cardiac conditions with fewer complications and faster recovery.
