The Government of Canada has issued a comprehensive travel advisory for India, urging its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution due to threats from terrorism, civil unrest, and crime.

The advisory specifically warns against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir—excluding Ladakh—citing risks of terrorism, militancy, kidnapping, and civil unrest. It also discourages non-essential travel to several northeastern states, including Manipur and Assam, as well as to areas within 10 km of the Pakistan border in Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan due to landmines, unexploded ordnance, and unpredictable security situations. “Non-essential travel should be avoided in the northeastern states of Assam and Manipur due to insurgent activity”, it said.

Canadians are further cautioned about possible disruptions to flights in northern and western India, and advised to stay alert amid potential anti-Canada protests linked to ongoing diplomatic tensions. Travellers are urged to avoid crowds, maintain a low profile, and remain vigilant, particularly in Delhi.

Consular services remain suspended in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, but continue at the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi and through Ottawa’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

The advisory also reminds Canadian travellers to adhere to India’s visa rules, including carrying passports valid for at least six months, registering with the FRRO for stays beyond 180 days, and avoiding visa overstays to prevent penalties or travel bans.
