Agartala, September 13, 2025: A long-cherished aspiration of the people of Tripura has taken shape with the Central Government granting approval for the establishment of a Central Tribal University in the state. The landmark move is seen as a game-changer for the state’s tribal communities, set to transform both the educational and socio-economic landscape.
Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, who had earlier placed a formal request before the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, welcomed the sanction with great satisfaction. “This university will empower future generations of Tripura to become more educated, skilled, and self-reliant,” he remarked, adding that the institution would act not only as a center of academic excellence but also as a catalyst for skill enhancement, employment generation, and regional development.
Debbarma further underlined the cultural importance of the initiative. “While fostering modern education, it will also ensure the preservation of our rich cultural and traditional identity, further strengthening Tripura’s role in the nation’s development. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaborative governance and the enduring spirit of Tripura’s tribal communities,” he said.
Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram played a decisive role in advancing the proposal. In a communication to Debbarma, Oram confirmed that he had examined the matter and forwarded it to the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education for necessary action. His intervention has been pivotal in moving the project forward.
On behalf of the people of the state, Debbarma extended heartfelt gratitude to Oram for his support and commitment to tribal advancement. The upcoming Central Tribal University is expected to pave new avenues for higher education, research, and cultural preservation, emerging as a cornerstone of inclusive growth in Tripura.
