Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday assured full support from the Central Government to Sikkim and Manipur as both states continue to battle the impact of heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides.

Scindia informed that he spoke with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and extended the Centre’s commitment to assist in all possible ways. “Spoke to Sikkim CM PS Tamang Golay regarding the flood and landslide situation caused by heavy rains in the State and assured him of every possible support from the Central Government,” he posted on X.

Sikkim has declared the damage in Mangan district, caused by continuous rainfall since May 28, a “disaster” under Section 22(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. A landslide in Lachen’s Chaten area claimed the lives of three army personnel, while six others remain missing.

A cloudburst and heavy rains on the night of May 30–31 caused widespread destruction in North Sikkim, damaging major roads and bridges. The Teesta River swelled by nearly 40 feet, affecting regional connectivity. Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited the flood-affected Indreni Bridge in Singtam on Tuesday to assess the situation.

The state’s Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has issued advisories urging tourists to stay updated with official information regarding road and weather conditions.

Scindia also spoke with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, assuring similar support from the Centre for flood relief efforts in the state. “We stand committed to supporting the affected people and ensuring timely relief and recovery,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles has deployed ten columns under Operation Jal Rahat II across Manipur and Tripura to carry out rescue, relief, and medical operations. Another column remains on standby at Haflong.

On Monday, teams from the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, and Manipur Fire Service jointly evacuated stranded students and staff from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal due to heavy waterlogging.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the flood situation. The Prime Minister assured all necessary support from the Centre.

Assam CM Sarma stated that the Prime Minister expressed concern over the situation and assured full support for the state’s ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
