The Central Government has officially imposed President’s Rule in violence-hit Manipur, citing a prolonged breakdown in governance and the state’s inability to restore normalcy amid ongoing ethnic conflict.
The announcement was made during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, marking a significant political development after months of unrest and instability in the state.
Reacting strongly, Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, alleged that the move was politically motivated, aimed more at saving the BJP from embarrassment than addressing the law and order crisis.
“President’s Rule in Manipur has not been imposed because of the law and order situation, but to save the embarrassment that the ruling party was about to face,” Akoijam stated during a debate in the Lok Sabha.
He criticised the government for delaying discussions on Manipur and called for fresh elections in the state. “We should have discussed Manipur like we discussed Operation Sindoor,” he said, adding that he would move motions urging the House to take up the issue.
Akoijam also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on former US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods. “He is working against the self-respect of the country, and the Prime Minister is not able to stand up to it, unfortunately,” he remarked.
The imposition of President’s Rule follows repeated calls from the opposition for accountability over the prolonged ethnic violence in the state, which has left hundreds dead and tens of thousands displaced.
