Chief Justice Of Manipur High Court Visits Relief Camp In Kangpokpi, Emphasizes Legal Aid And Social Equality

Justice K. Somashekar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur and Patron-in-Chief of the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA), visited the Mandop Relief Camp in Ward No. 11, Kangpokpi Town, as part of a Promotional Legal Aid and Awareness Campaign. He was accompanied by Justice Alek Muivah, Secretary of MASLSA, and other members.

During his address, Justice Somashekar reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable communities. He lauded the collective efforts of government agencies, peace groups, and volunteers in supporting those displaced by conflict. Highlighting the significance of education, he called it the “most valuable material possession,” essential for eradicating social stigma.

Referencing constitutional provisions, the Chief Justice emphasized the importance of free legal aid for tribal communities and underscored the principle of equality before the law. He urged everyone to uphold justice and equality irrespective of societal status or background.

Justice Alek Muivah also addressed the camp inmates, stressing the significance of Article 39A of the Indian Constitution, which ensures Free Legal Aid to the underprivileged. He elaborated on various legal aid initiatives, including NALSA and Lok Adalats, and informed the residents about the toll-free legal aid helpline.

Essential relief materials were distributed to 38 families in the camp by MASLSA. As a token of appreciation, the Senapati and Kangpokpi Bar Association presented shawls to Justice Somashekar and Justice Muivah.

The event was attended by Kangpokpi DC Mahesh Chaudhari (IAS), SP Manoj Prabhakar (IPS), ADM N. Shokhongam Baite (MCS), members of MASLSA, officials from the Senapati and Kangpokpi Bar Association, and various District Level Officers.
