CM Khemchand Hails ‘Boong’ For Putting Manipur On Global Stage

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has hailed the BAFTA triumph of director Lakshmipriya Devi’s film Boong as a proud moment for both the state and the nation, stating that the achievement has firmly placed Manipuri cinema on the global map.

Congratulating the filmmaker in a Facebook post, the Chief Minister said her victory at the 79th BAFTA 2026 exemplifies her commitment to meaningful and impactful storytelling.

The quirky coming-of-age comedy-drama Boong won the award for Best Children’s & Family Film at the prestigious ceremony held in London on Sunday.

“Smt Lakshmipriya Devi’s victory exemplifies her dedication to impactful filmmaking, with ‘Boong’ claiming the top honour in the Best Children’s & Family Film category, bringing accolades to Manipur and India,” Singh wrote.

The film is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under the banner of Excel Entertainment.

Describing the win as more than an individual accomplishment, the Chief Minister said it reflects the immense creative strength of Manipur. He noted that Lakshmipriya Devi has consistently brought recognition to the state through her cinematic work, and that the latest honour further elevates the stature of Manipuri art and culture on the global stage.

“On behalf of the people of Manipur, I extend my heartfelt appreciation and best wishes for her continued success. May she continue to inspire generations and bring greater pride and glory to our state,” he added.

At the ceremony, Lakshmipriya Devi received the trophy from Paddington Bear, the beloved character featured in Paddington The Musical. In her emotional acceptance speech, she made a heartfelt appeal for peace, drawing warm applause from the audience.

She was joined on stage by the producers and the film’s assistant director, Rahul Sharda.
The BAFTA recognition marks a significant milestone for regional Indian cinema, with Boong emerging as a standout in the international children’s and family film category and shining a global spotlight on Manipur’s vibrant film industry.
