Aizawl, May 27: Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday chaired a review meeting at his office on the 132 MW Tuivai Hydroelectric Power Project. The meeting was attended by Power Minister F. Rodingliana and senior officials of the Power & Electricity Department.

Officials informed the meeting that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Tuivai project has been completed and the project is now ready for tendering. The government is exploring implementation of the project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

At present, Mizoram’s peak power demand stands at 182 MW. As per the 20th Electric Power Survey, the demand is projected to rise to around 213 MW by 2030. The state currently has an installed generation capacity of 50.20 MW, although actual generation is lower, meeting only about 10 percent of the state’s total power requirement.

The state spends approximately Rs. 64,954.45 lakh annually on power purchases, excluding transmission charges. In view of this expenditure, the government has emphasized the importance of increasing local power generation capacity.

The Tuivai Hydroelectric Project was initially surveyed by the Central Water Commission in 1992 with an estimated potential of 210 MW. However, as part of the proposed project area falls in Manipur, it was later re-surveyed and redesigned, resulting in a revised capacity of 132 MW.

According to the DPR, the project is estimated to cost Rs. 2,289.50 crore and is targeted for completion within five years. The meeting also decided that annual financial requirements for the project will be assessed in consultation with the Finance Department.

Apart from the Tuivai project, the meeting also reviewed the ongoing Tuirini Hydroelectric Project and works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Discussions were also held on issues to be taken up with the Union Power Minister during his upcoming visit to Mizoram.
