Agartala, June 03, 2026: A controversy has surfaced over the ongoing census of the Reang tribal community being conducted under the aegis of the PTGB Department, prompting strong objections from the social organization ‘Bru Sangrangma Mothah’.
Addressing a press conference held at Tripura’s Birchandramanu in Santirbazar subdivision on Wednesday, the organization expressed deep concern over the methodology adopted for the census. General Secretary Khanaram Riang alleged that the survey process is flawed and lacks proper planning, raising the likelihood of significant inaccuracies in the data collected.
He stated that despite submitting a written complaint to the PTGB Department, the organization has not received any satisfactory response so far. In light of the situation, ‘Bru Sangrangma Mothah’ has called for the immediate intervention of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and concerned Minister Shukla Charan Noatia.
Khanaram Reang emphasized that the census should either be conducted in consultation with various Reang social organizations or be directly entrusted to them to ensure accuracy and reliability. “If individuals unfamiliar with the local language and cultural nuances carry out the survey, linguistic barriers will arise, resulting in flawed data that could create administrative complications in the future,” he warned.
The organization also questioned the transparency of the survey process, seeking clarity on the agency awarded the contract and the financial details involved. It alleged that the appointment of surveyors lacked openness and accountability.
Highlighting the importance of community participation, the organization asserted that involving local residents is essential for accurately documenting the population size, socio-economic conditions, and cultural identity of the Reang community.
Warning of serious consequences if corrective measures are not taken, ‘Bru Sangrangma Mothah’ urged the state government to reassign the responsibility of conducting the census to a competent Riang organization, replacing the current executing agency to ensure a fair and accurate enumeration.
