Agartala, March 21, 2026: The conviction rate in rape cases in Tripura has been recorded at 22 percent over the past three years, according to data presented in the state Legislative Assembly.

Responding to an unstarred question raised by CPM MLA Nirmal Biswas, the Law Department informed that verdicts were delivered in 758 rape cases during this period. Of these, the accused were convicted in 167 cases.

The Department further stated that 457 rape-related cases are currently pending trial across courts in the state. Among them, 59 cases are being heard in the Tripura High Court, while the remaining 398 cases are pending in district and lower courts.

Providing a detailed breakdown, the Law Department noted that out of the 758 cases disposed of in the last three years, 218 verdicts were delivered by the High Court and 540 by district and subordinate courts. In terms of convictions, the High Court accounted for 94 cases, whereas 73 convictions were secured in the lower courts.

The data highlights both the scale of pending cases and the relatively low conviction rate, drawing attention to challenges within the judicial process in handling such serious offences.
