The Coordination Committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of insurgent groups active in Manipur, has announced a statewide shutdown on December 11 and 12 to protest and boycott the proposed visit of President Droupadi Murmu to the state.
In a statement, CorCom said the shutdown will begin at 1:00 am on December 11 and continue for the duration of the President’s stay. The group stated that essential services such as medical care, fire services, water supply and ritual-related activities would be exempted.
President Murmu is scheduled to arrive in Manipur on December 11 and attend the state-level observance of Nupi Lal on December 12, a historic event commemorating the struggle of Manipuri women against colonial rule.
CorCom alleged that the visit would not promote peace, harmony or development and claimed it could further intensify tensions among communities. The outfit said it “condemns and boycotts” the visit, making references to what it termed a continuing “proxy war” in the state.
The group also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur on September 13, alleging it was aimed at dividing the state, and accused the Government of India of undermining Manipur’s unity and integrity.
The shutdown call has heightened concerns over possible disruptions, as Manipur continues to grapple with deep social and political divisions.
