The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly criticized Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s apology for the crisis in Manipur, calling it an admission of governmental failure. Biren Singh, during a press conference in Imphal, described the past year as “very unfortunate” and apologized for the loss of lives and displacement of families. Expressing hope for peace and normalcy by 2025, he cited recent progress in the state.
However, the CPI dismissed the apology, stating it reflects “the gravity of the crisis and the complete failure of the government to address the issues.” In a scathing statement, the party said, “This is a clear acknowledgement of the collapse of law and order in the state.” It criticized the state government for failing to protect its citizens or ensure justice, which has led to widespread insecurity and suffering.
The CPI also condemned the lack of efforts toward reconciliation, noting, “There have been no concrete measures to foster dialogue between communities or to heal the deep social wounds caused by the ongoing crisis.” The party accused the government of excluding political parties from discussions to devise a comprehensive solution.
The CPI further criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that his refusal to visit Manipur or directly address the crisis demonstrates a lack of concern for the state’s people. “The Union Government’s inaction has eroded trust and worsened the situation,” the statement added.
Calling for Biren Singh’s resignation, the CPI said, “The people of Manipur deserve accountable and empathetic governance, which Chief Minister Biren Singh and his government have utterly failed to provide. His resignation is imperative to restore confidence in the administration and pave the way for a fresh, people-centric approach to resolving the crisis.”
Reaffirming its solidarity with the people of Manipur, the CPI urged both state and central governments to address the suffering of displaced individuals and work toward justice, peace, and reconciliation in the conflict-ridden region.
