Agartala, July 08, 2025: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has raised serious concerns over what it calls a “complete breakdown” of law and order in Tripura, citing a string of violent incidents against opposition parties and alleged police inaction. In a strongly-worded letter to Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, CPI(M) leaders led by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury have demanded an immediate end to “the ongoing policy of repression” and urged that police be allowed to act impartially and uphold the rule of law.

The letter accuses the state administration and police of turning a blind eye to repeated attacks on opposition meetings and leaders, claiming that a section of the Tripura Police is being used as “a political tool” by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Tripura Police once brought honour to the state by receiving the President’s Colour. Today, a section of the force is being misused to serve the ruling party’s interests and suppress democratic voices. This is tarnishing the image of the entire force,” the CPI(M) stated.

The letter lists several recent incidents as evidence of escalating political violence in Tripura. On June 17 in Bishalgarh, a peaceful pro-Palestine solidarity meeting organized by the CPI(M) was attacked by around 50 to 60 alleged BJP Yuva Morcha activists. Despite the presence of police officials, including the SDPO and OC, the attackers pelted stones, vandalized about 20 motorcycles, and ransacked the party office. An FIR naming 26 individuals was filed, but no arrests have been made so far.

On the same day in Karaimura, the residence of CPI(M) leader Md. Musharraf Hossain was allegedly attacked. According to the party, women were beaten, property was vandalized, and valuables worth several lakhs of rupees were looted. Though an FIR was lodged, the police have reportedly taken no action.

On June 21 in Dataram Bazar, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was physically assaulted during a public meeting. The attack was allegedly carried out by BJP workers in the presence of police personnel, who did not intervene.

On June 24 in Takajala, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury’s meeting at the community hall was targeted by brick-throwing individuals believed to be Tipra Motha supporters. The police allegedly remained passive during the incident.

On June 29 in Kakraban, a CPI(M) meeting was disrupted after BJP supporters reportedly occupied the venue and attacked the party office. The meeting was ultimately cancelled due to police inaction.

On July 6 in Belonia, CPI(M) MLA Dipankar Sen was allegedly dragged off a moving motorcycle and assaulted in front of the Superintendent of Police’s residence.

Finally, on July 7 in Kamalpur, CPI(M) was forced to cancel a campaign programme due to threats from BJP supporters and what the party describes as non-cooperation by the local police.

“This string of unchecked violence has created an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness. It is no longer just about political suppression — the general public’s security is at risk,” CPI(M) wrote in the letter.

The party has called for immediate intervention by the Chief Minister to restore democratic norms in the state and ensure that police function independently without political pressure.
