In a powerful display of unity amid the continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur, officers from the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) came together to lead a successful student evacuation operation in Jammu and Kashmir on May 10, 2025.

A total of 39 students — including several from Manipur and other northeastern states — were evacuated from a sensitive area and provided temporary shelter and meals at the Tactical Headquarters of the 84 Battalion, CRPF, in Ramban. The operation was coordinated by Commandant Ningthoujam Ranbir Singh of the 84 Battalion.

The team of officers included Commandant Ningthoujam Ranbir Singh (Meitei) from Bishnupur, Deputy Commandant Moirangmayum Indrakumar Singh (Meitei) of the 201 Battalion in Samurou, Commandant Shimreishang Kengoo (Naga) of the 92 Battalion in Ukhrul, and Assistant Commandant S. Gin Khan Mung (Kuki) of the 53 Battalion in Churachandpur.

The students spent the night at the CRPF base in Ramban and continued their journey to Jammu the next morning after being served breakfast.

The coordinated effort has drawn widespread praise for its symbolic message of cooperation and humanity in a time of deepening ethnic strife in Manipur. Academics and student groups, particularly in Delhi, hailed the gesture as an example of service above ethnic lines.

Dr. Pusham Azad Babu, faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Miranda House, University of Delhi, released a statement applauding the officers. Calling the evacuation a “timely and humane intervention,” Dr. Babu emphasized that the operation reflected the values of national service and communal harmony.
