Agartala, August 30, 2025: Tripura has witnessed cyber fraud cases amounting to ₹51.49 crore, affecting 269 individuals across the state, according to official figures released by the Tripura Police. Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag has appealed to citizens to remain cautious and adopt digital safety practices to combat this growing menace.

In a media interaction event at Tripura Police headquarters on Friday, DGP Anurag revealed that 33,303 lakh rupees were siphoned off by fraudsters, though police have so far managed to recover ₹33.84 lakh. Additionally, authorities have seized 20,387 bank accounts linked to cybercrime, freezing nearly ₹5.76 crore, which, he expressed hope, would be refunded within the next three months.

“Cyber criminals are constantly inventing new tricks. While cases are rising nationwide, the trend in Tripura is gradually declining thanks to growing awareness. However, people must remain more cautious,” the DGP said.

Citing national statistics, Anurag pointed out that India ranks second in the world in terms of financial fraud through cybercrime. The scale is alarming—cyber fraud worth ₹74.65 crore was reported in 2023, which surged to ₹228.45 crore in 2024. Across India, nearly 850 million citizens now use the internet, making them vulnerable targets.

According to police reports, criminals frequently use methods such as: Fake electricity/gas bills and RTO challans; Digital arrest scams posing as police or tax officials; Investment scams and fake franchise offers; Lottery and OLX fraud; and Fraud through video calls, social media harassment, and identity cloning using AI and deepfake technology.

One notable case in Tripura involved a person losing ₹2.3 crore in a fake investment scheme, while another citizen was duped of ₹18 lakh on a false franchise promise.

Cyber fraud cases in Tripura were reported at ₹1.98 crore in 2021, which rose to ₹4.62 crore in 2022, further increased to ₹9 crore in 2023, surged to ₹25.54 crore in 2024, and stood at ₹9.77 crore till July 2025.

Despite this steady rise, the DGP reiterated that prompt reporting and vigilance can significantly reduce losses.

Police have urged citizens to: Install only trusted apps and delete unused applications; Use strong, frequently changed passwords; Avoid sharing OTPs or personal documents with anyone; Immediately report cyber fraud by dialing 1930 or contacting the Agartala Cyber Crime Police Station; and Stay updated with cybercrime alerts via ‘CyberDost’ and official police handles

Anurag further warned against clicking on suspicious links, responding to “work from home” scams, installing unregulated loan apps, or engaging in unauthorized cryptocurrency P2P transactions.

“Remember, no genuine law enforcement officer will ever make a digital arrest. If you receive such calls, it’s a scam. Citizens must stay alert and report immediately,” the DGP emphasized.

Tripura Police concluded with a strong appeal: public awareness is the most powerful weapon against cybercrime.
