Agartala, April 06, 2026: The by-election to Tripura’s 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency will be held on April 9, with polling scheduled from 7 am to 5 pm, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey said on Monday.
The bypoll has been necessitated following the death of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. A total of six candidates are contesting in the constituency located in North Tripura district.
While briefing media personnel at Agartala on Monday afternoon, Pandey said campaigning for the by-election will conclude at 5 pm on April 7, after which the mandatory 48-hour silence period will come into effect.
During the silence period, all public meetings, processions and campaign-related activities will remain prohibited in accordance with election guidelines, he said.
According to official data, the constituency has 46,142 electors, including 22,384 male and 23,758 female voters. There are also 91 service electors, comprising 88 men and three women.
A total of 55 polling stations have been set up across the constituency, including 32 in urban areas and 23 in rural areas, spread over 42 locations — 23 urban and 19 rural.
Of the total polling stations, 11 will be managed entirely by women, two by persons with disabilities, and two by youth. Eleven model polling stations have also been established, the CEO said.
All polling stations have been equipped with basic facilities such as drinking water, lighting, ramps for persons with disabilities, toilets and shaded waiting areas for voters.
To ensure transparency in the polling process, 75 micro observers, including reserve personnel, have been deployed.
For expenditure monitoring and law enforcement, six naka points, 24 static surveillance teams, 12 flying squad teams and video surveillance teams have been put in place, Pandey said.
Polling personnel will be dispatched from Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School to their respective polling centres. Reception centres, strong rooms and counting centres have also been arranged with adequate security.
The administration has declared a dry day from April 7 to April 9.
Officials said canvassing within 100 metres of any polling station will be prohibited and violations will invite legal action, though candidates may set up election booths beyond the restricted zone with limited arrangements.
Counting of votes will be taken up on May 4.
