Agartala, October 24, 2025: In a forward-looking initiative to modernize agricultural practices, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sepahijala, CAU (I), Latiacherra, Tripura, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Tripura, has introduced drone technology for pest and disease management in farmers’ fields across the Bishalgarh agricultural subdivision.
Recognizing the persistent challenge of timely and effective pest control—especially in paddy fields vulnerable after drought-like conditions—the agencies organized a demonstration programme on 23rd October 2025 at Bishalgarh Municipal Council, Chandan Nagar Gram Panchayat under Bishalgarh RD Block. The event showcased the precision and efficiency of drone-based pesticide application and drew participation from around 50 farmers.
The programme was graced by several dignitaries, including Sushanta Deb, MLA of Bishalgarh Constituency; Atashi Das, Chairman of Bishalgarh Panchayat Samiti; Dr Bibhas Kanti De, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Sepahijala; Ar Himanish Laskar, Superintendent of Agriculture, Bishalgarh; Dr Shatabhisa Sarkar, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Sepahijala; Dr Joy Kumar Dey, SMS (Agronomy), KVK Sepahijala; and Ar Prabir Datta, Agriculture Sector Officer, Bishalgarh.
The demonstration emphasized the transformative potential of drones in agricultural pest management. By enabling targeted pesticide application, drones help reduce chemical usage, lower labor dependency, and minimize health risks associated with direct exposure to agrochemicals. The technology also allows coverage of larger areas in significantly less time, making it a sustainable solution for farmers.
Beyond field application, the initiative includes provisions for training and licensing, empowering farmers to adopt drone technology independently and responsibly.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr Anupam Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, CAU, Imphal, and organized with support from Dr A.K. Mohanty, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone-VII, Umiam, Meghalaya; Prof. Ph. Ranjit Sharma, Director of Extension Education, CAU (I), Manipur; Prof. Arun Bhai Patel, Dean, College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra, Tripura; and Dr Shatabhisa Sarkar, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Sepahijala.
