Aizawl, Nov 10: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a stern warning to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during campaigning for the Dampa assembly bypoll.
Officials stated that the commission reviewed the response from Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) president Lalliansawta and found it unsatisfactory after examining the report submitted by the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The ECI directed the Mizoram CEO to ensure that the ZPM leadership fully complies with the MCC. The poll panel also reminded all party star campaigners to act responsibly and avoid statements that could undermine fair election practices or raise doubts about the integrity of the election process.
The Commission emphasized that public figures, including ministers, must uphold the sanctity of elections and maintain restraint while addressing the public.
The reprimand follows complaints by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), alleging that Lalduhoma announced a Rs 770-crore water supply project at Reiek village during a campaign event at West Phaileng on October 21, violating the MCC. The MNF also accused Chief Minister’s adviser and MLA Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah of holding free medical camps and distributing medicines in two villages on October 17.
A recent MNF complaint further alleged that Lalduhoma made provocative statements and misused his position to influence voters. Mizoram CEO Lalrozama said the election department has sought clarification from the ZPM and will submit its findings to the ECI.
Voting for the Dampa bypoll is scheduled for November 11.
