Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, a veteran political leader and four-time chief minister of Meghalaya, passed away at Bethany Hospital in Shillong on Friday night. He was 91.

Born on April 10, 1934, in Ri-Bhoi district, Lapang began his career as a road labourer before becoming a school sub-inspector. He entered politics in 1972, winning the Nongpoh seat as an independent candidate in the first elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Lapang went on to serve as chief minister on four occasions between 1992 and 2010. His first tenure began in 1992, followed by terms in 2003, 2007–2008, and 2009–2010. A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, he also held several key ministerial portfolios during his political career.

In 1958, he married Amethyst Lynda Jomes Blah. His father’s name was Donwa War.

Widely respected for his humility and strong bond with the people, Lapang continued to be regarded as an elder statesman after his retirement. In 2024, a life-size statue was unveiled in Ri-Bhoi district to honour his decades of service.

Political leaders across party lines have offered condolences, remembering his role in shaping the political landscape of Meghalaya. Funeral details are awaited from the family.
