Kohima, April 3: Veteran Congress leader and former Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has resigned from the Indian National Congress, citing a “breach of trust” and what he described as unconstitutional interference by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in the state unit’s affairs.
Therie, who has also served as a state minister, submitted his resignation to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge through the party’s Nagaland in-charge MP, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka.
In his resignation, Therie cited the AICC’s withdrawal from a 10-point modalities agreement between the INC and NPCC, which was designed under Article 371A to grant the state unit a degree of autonomy. He claimed that the AICC’s Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan reorganization drive undermined the authority of the NPCC.
Therie noted that despite his protest letter dated January 31, 2026, the AICC appointed new district Congress committee (DCC) presidents on March 30, replacing leaders before the completion of their terms. He also alleged embezzlement of election funds by AICC functionaries in Nagaland, accusing the party of shielding the guilty while penalizing dissenting leaders.
The AICC did not issue an immediate comment. NPCC president and Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir stated that he had not yet received Therie’s resignation letter.
