Agartala, February 23, 2026: The Badarpur Railway Police achieved a major breakthrough on Sunday morning after arresting a young man with gold biscuits worth more than ₹80 lakh during a special operation in Assam’s Barak Valley.
According to Railway Police sources, the seizure was made during a search operation conducted on the Deoghar Weekly Express (Train No. 15626). During the inspection, a passenger identified as Abhijit Debnath was found in possession of five gold biscuits. The total weight of the recovered gold was measured at 584.4 grams, with an estimated market value exceeding ₹80 lakh.
Police officials said that the accused is a resident of Harichowdhuri Para in Ranibazar area under Majlishpur police station of West Tripura. He was immediately taken into custody following the recovery.
Railway Police authorities confirmed that further interrogation of the arrested youth is currently underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the gold consignment. Investigators are also probing whether the seizure is linked to a larger smuggling network operating across state borders.
The incident has generated considerable excitement and discussion, particularly as it comes in the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections. Security agencies have heightened vigilance across railway routes amid concerns over illegal transportation of valuables during the sensitive pre-election period.
Railway Police officials stated that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests or seizures cannot be ruled out in the coming days.
