The Government of India has rolled out the implementation of the New Revised GST Rates under the Next Generation GST Reforms, effective from September 22, 2025. The new structure rationalizes the existing four major tax slabs into two—5% and 18%—with a 40% rate applied to specific goods, while several essential items have been shifted to the exempt category (0%).
The reforms are aimed at simplifying the indirect tax regime, enhancing transparency, and strengthening the ease of doing business across the country.
As part of the initiative, a Market Drive is being conducted in key commercial hubs such as Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar, and Khuyathong, where most wholesalers and distributors are concentrated. The drive is being carried out in coordination with the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and supported by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
The campaign seeks to disseminate information about the revised GST rate structure across categories such as FMCG, stationery, and medicines. It also aims to educate traders, shopkeepers, and consumers on compliance procedures, highlight the benefits of the reforms, and provide a platform for direct interaction between tax officials and stakeholders. Through these efforts, the government hopes to encourage voluntary compliance, promote fair pricing, ensure consumer welfare, and strengthen national revenue mobilization.
The Next Generation GST Reforms are being hailed as a milestone in indirect taxation, designed to minimize classification disputes, leverage digital technologies for easier compliance, and reduce costs for small businesses. By streamlining processes, the reforms also reinforce the vision of “One Nation, One Tax, One Market.”
The government has appealed for the active cooperation of traders, industry representatives, and consumers in adopting the changes. Media organizations, both print and electronic, have also been requested to provide wide coverage to ensure that the benefits of the reforms reach all sections of society.
With the implementation of these reforms, the government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that GST evolves as a robust, modern, and progressive taxation system aligned with the needs of India’s growing economy.
