Agartala, July 9, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the southern districts of Tripura as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the next two days due to a low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. This weather system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation up to 7.6 km above sea level, which is expected to move slowly west-northwestward across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh in the coming days.

The monsoon trough currently extends from Amritsar to the northeast Bay of Bengal, passing through Chandigarh, Nazibabad, Shahjahanpur, Kanpur, Daltonganj, and the low-pressure area. This alignment is facilitating significant moisture incursion over Tripura, resulting in widespread rainfall.

According to the IMD, moderate to heavy rainfall began in parts of the state from July 8, and similar conditions are forecast for July 9 and 10.

As per the alerts issued by the Meteorological Department, a red alert remains in place for South Tripura district. Orange alerts have been issued for Gomati, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts, while yellow alerts are currently in effect for the remaining districts of the state.

As of 8:30 AM on July 9, the recorded rainfall in different districts is as follows:

In West Tripura district, Agartala recorded 3.7 cm, AD nagar 4.8 cm, Lembucherra 4.6 cm, Bodhjungnagar 5.5 cm, and Jirania 8.3 cm of rainfall.

In Sepahijala district, Sonamura recorded 7.5 cm, Bishalgarh 3.8 cm, Gazaria 8 cm, and Mohanbhog (Sonamura) 11.5 cm.

In Khowai district, rainfall measured 4.8 cm in Khowai town and 7.6 cm in Teliamura.

In Gomati district, Udaipur received 12 cm, Amarpur 17.3 cm, Karbook 9.1 cm, and Kakraban 8.4 cm.

In South Tripura district, Belonia recorded the highest with 29.5 cm, followed by Sabroom with 19.9 cm and Bogafa with 22.9 cm.

In North Tripura district, Panisagar recorded 4.3 cm, Kanchanpur 4.8 cm, Ashapara 5.8 cm, Kadamtala 2.9 cm, and Natunbazar 4.7 cm.

In Unakoti district, both Kumarghat and Kailashahar received 7.6 cm of rainfall.

In Dhalai district, Chawmanu recorded 6.5 cm, Gandacherra 15 cm, Kamalpur 5 cm and Manughat 8.1 cm.

Speaking to the media, a senior IMD official said, “There is a significant buildup of moisture due to the monsoon trough and the current low-pressure system. The next 48 hours are critical, especially for southern Tripura.”

Authorities have been asked to stay vigilant and ensure readiness for emergency response, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides.
