A multi-departmental team concluded a high-altitude glacial lake expedition in North Sikkim, which began on 20th August. The team included members from DMG, Sikkim Police, SSDMA, DDMA, SU, CWC, GSI, NIH, NIDM, CWPRS, HPSDMA, DGRE, and IPR.

The expedition was divided into two groups. Team A completed its objectives at Dolma Sampa and Sora funnel area and returned on 26th August. Team B moved towards South Lhonak Lake, where sub-team B1 (CWC, GSI, NIH, HPSDMA, DGRE) returned to Gangtok on 29th August, while sub-team B2 (DST, SU, IPR) advanced to Changsang before returning to Thangu on 1st September. On 2nd September, Team B2 prepared to move towards Yulhe Kangse Lake.

This marked the first-ever visit to Yulhe Kangse Lake (16,378 ft), providing valuable baseline data on lake depth, sediment composition, and potential links to regional hydrology and climate change. The findings are expected to enhance understanding of the fragile high-altitude ecosystems of the Eastern Himalayas.

On 3rd September, the team reached Yulhe Kangse Base Camp and performed a traditional puja before starting the first bathymetric survey and sediment sampling the following day. They then returned via Lachung and reached Gangtok on 6th September, concluding the expedition.

The mission’s success was supported by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Indian Army, the local Zumsa community, and Khangri Tours and Trek, ensuring safety and smooth execution of the scientific endeavor.
