Imphal came alive on Wednesday as the iconic ‘Imphal Derby’ between local giants TRAU FC and NEROCA FC kicked off the 134th edition of the Indian Oil Durand Cup at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium. The opening Group F clash, which began at 4 PM, transformed the state capital into a vibrant celebration of Manipur’s deep-rooted love for football.

The excitement was palpable hours before the kickoff, with fans queuing up outside the stadium as early as noon.
Group F features a tightly contested lineup with TRAU FC, NEROCA FC, the Indian Navy Football Team, and Real Kashmir FC. With only the top two teams advancing, every match is critical.

The Imphal leg of Asia’s oldest football tournament—first held in 1888—is being jointly hosted by the Indian Army and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur. Local matches will continue at Khuman Lampak until August 12.
In a remarkable gesture of support, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla declared a half-day holiday from 1 PM for all government offices and educational institutions across Manipur. The decision was widely applauded as a recognition of the sport’s cultural significance and a boost to public participation.
As the stadium roared and the teams battled on the pitch, the Imphal Derby stood out as more than a game—it was a vibrant display of sportsmanship, unity, and pride. For Manipur, hosting the Durand Cup is not just an honour but a declaration that football is the heartbeat of the Northeast.
