Gangtok, Feb 23: Troops of the Indian Army rescued 46 tourists who were stranded after heavy snowfall disrupted movement in high-altitude areas of East Sikkim district, officials said on Monday.
According to a defence statement, several tourist vehicles became stuck on vulnerable road stretches on Sunday following sudden intense snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, leaving tourists and local travellers exposed to severe weather conditions.
Army personnel rushed to the affected locations after receiving information about the situation and launched immediate rescue operations. The stranded tourists were evacuated and shifted to the nearest Army camp, where they were provided medical examinations, warm shelter, hot meals, heating arrangements, and essential relief materials to withstand the extreme cold and altitude stress.
Medical teams confirmed that all rescued individuals were stable before further movement was allowed. The Army also ensured the safe relocation of more than 150 tourist vehicles to secure areas.
Heavy snowfall has affected travel in several high-altitude routes across Sikkim in recent days, prompting authorities to advise caution for tourists visiting mountainous regions.
