Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, have been suspended for five days in multiple districts of Manipur following concerns over the prevailing law and order situation. The suspension came into effect from 11:45 pm on June 7, according to a notice issued by the Manipur Police.
The districts affected by the suspension are Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur. Authorities fear that anti-social elements may exploit social media platforms to circulate provocative content, including hate speech, images, and videos, which could further inflame public sentiments and disrupt peace.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur, especially in the five districts, there is apprehension that social media may be misused to incite violence,” the police order stated.
In addition, a complete curfew has been imposed in Bishnupur district. District Magistrates of all five affected districts have issued prohibitory orders, urging citizens to comply strictly.
Assembly of four or more persons has been banned in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, and Kakching districts. The carrying of firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or other lethal and sharp-edged weapons has also been strictly prohibited.
“The order is being passed ex-parte in view of the emergent situation. Any person found violating the order will be liable for legal action,” the notification warned.
