Agartala, August 02, 2025: Two nuns from Kerala were arrested at Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh on July 25, sparking concern among political and religious leaders. Tripura’s Tipra Motha founder and Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Saturday wrote to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai demanding an impartial and independent probe into the incident.

The arrested nuns have been identified as Sister Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis. While details of the charges remain unclear, several leaders, including members of the BJP in Kerala, have raised fears that the nuns may be victims of harassment and false accusations.

In his letter, Pradyot mentioned that he had met the Chief Minister at the Parliament House the previous day and had a discussion on various key issues, including matters related to the tribal community. He thanked the CM for the engagement but flagged serious concerns about the arrest of the two Christian missionaries.

“This incident has caused widespread concern. While the circumstances of their arrest are yet to be fully clarified, sources including BJP Kerala suggest that the two nuns may have been targeted unfairly,” Pradyot stated in the letter.

He further emphasized the importance of protecting individuals who are engaged in social service, particularly those from minority communities. “It is essential that people working selflessly for society are not subjected to any form of racial or religious discrimination based on misinformation,” he wrote.

Calling for justice, he urged the Chief Minister to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the matter. “I trust the Chhattisgarh government will take appropriate steps to uphold justice and prevent any misuse of power or misinterpretation of facts,” Pradyot concluded.
