Agartala, February 12, 2026: The Left Front on Thursday organized a protest march in the city in support of the nationwide general strike called by central trade unions and workers’ federations. Senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and CITU state president Manik Dey, participated along with party workers and supporters.
The procession began from the fair ground and passed through several city streets before culminating at the same venue. Participants raised slogans demanding protection of workers’ rights, job security and fair wages.
Addressing reporters after the march, former CM Manik Sarkar alleged that policies adopted by the BJP-led government have increased pressure on common people and the working class. He said the strike was called to safeguard workers’ rights and ensure employment security and fair remuneration.
Sarkar further criticised the Centre over India’s recent agreement with the United States, claiming it would adversely impact workers and farmers. He asserted that the ongoing movement aims to protect the interests of the people and would intensify in the coming days.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also targeted the central government, stating that the strike had become inevitable as the demands of workers and common citizens were being ignored.
Meanwhile, Left supporters staged picketing and demonstrations in various parts of Tripura from the morning to make the general strike a success. However, party leaders alleged that their programmes were obstructed by the administration.
In Khowai district, Left activists attempted to organize processions and picketing in support of the strike. Police intervened and blocked the march, and several leaders and workers were detained and taken to the old town hall in Khowai to prevent escalation.
Similar incidents were reported from Belonia and Kathalia, where police stopped protesters during picketing attempts and detained them shortly thereafter.
The administration maintained that the measures were taken to preserve law and order. The Left leadership, however, described the police action as unwarranted interference in a democratic movement.
Despite sporadic tension in several districts, no major untoward incidents were reported during the strike.
