A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred on October 9 in the Mawlasnai outpost area under Umiam police station. The girl went missing around 11 a.m. after returning from school, and her body was recovered at about 7:20 p.m. the same day.
The Meghalaya Forensic Crime Scene Unit examined the site and collected evidence, after which the body was sent to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
District Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly. Authorities aim to file a chargesheet within 14 days and pursue a fast-track trial to secure conviction within three to four months. The accused will also be registered in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO).
