The 24th anniversary of the Great June Uprising, Unity Day was solemnly observed on Wednesday at Kekrupat, Imphal. The event was organised by the Observance Committee of the 24th Great June Uprising, Unity Day – 2021.

Hundreds of people, including family members of the 18 martyrs, political leaders, student bodies, Meira Paibi groups, and local clubs, gathered to pay floral tributes at the memorial complex.

The observance marks the mass uprising of June 18, 2001, when people protested against the inclusion of the words “without territorial limit” in the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India and the NSCN (I-M). Fourteen protesters were killed on the day after CRPF personnel opened fire, and four more succumbed to injuries later. The controversial phrase was subsequently withdrawn from the agreement on July 27, 2001.
