The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) have formally called off their agitation over the Gwaltabi incident of May 20, 2025, following assurances and subsequent actions taken by the state government.

The decision was adopted during a joint meeting of AMWJU and EGM held at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, on Saturday.

The move comes after Governor of Manipur assured a fair inquiry into the incident, leading to the constitution of a two-member Inquiry Committee, which submitted its report on June 13, 2025. The state government has since conveyed that the committee’s recommendations have been accepted, with directives issued to concerned departments and security agencies to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

While announcing the withdrawal of the agitation, AMWJU and EGM expressed cautious optimism, noting that the press fraternity will remain vigilant and will not hesitate to resume democratic actions if assurances fail to ensure safety and dignity of journalists. “The safety and dignity of media persons are non-negotiable,” they said in a joint statement.

The two journalist bodies also extended gratitude to media professionals, civil society organisations, and the people of Manipur for their solidarity, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding press freedom and accountability in the state.
