Imphal, Aug 30: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has categorically rejected calls for his resignation, despite facing criticism from opposition parties and accusations of favoring Meiteis during ethnic clashes that erupted in May last year.
In an interview with PTI Videos on Thursday, Singh defended his record, attributing the violence to his government’s anti-drug initiatives and crackdown on illegal immigrants. He claimed that his efforts to “protect” the state have retained public support.
Singh acknowledged people’s disappointment over his perceived inaction during the violence but stressed his belief in dialogue and peace over retaliation. He emphasized his dedication to serving all communities in Manipur, including Meiteis, Kukis, and Nagas.
The ethnic clashes resulted in 226 lives lost and thousands displaced, but Singh remains committed to his approach, saying, “Why should I resign? Have I stolen anything? Is there a scandal against me? Have I worked against the nation or state?”
