In a renewed appeal for urgent redressal, the Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC) on Wednesday met the Governor of Manipur, pressing for immediate action on the long-pending demands of Meitei families displaced during the 2023 conflict in Churachandpur.

The CMUC delegation, representing internally displaced persons (IDPs), conveyed their deep frustration over the government’s continued inaction despite submitting detailed memorandums earlier on March 13 and April 21. During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the deteriorating conditions in relief camps, where displaced families have been living in temporary shelters for over a year.

Key concerns raised included the absence of educational assistance for affected children, lack of access to vital documents like birth and domicile certificates, and the need for displaced persons themselves to manage relief camps to address daily grievances effectively. The committee also called for a safe and structured return of families to their original homes, tailored employment opportunities, and the construction of temporary shelters at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur district as an interim measure.

In response, the Governor reportedly acknowledged the urgency of the situation and assured the CMUC that some of their demands would be addressed within three days. He also pledged to expedite coordination with concerned departments for timely and concrete measures.

While the CMUC cautiously welcomed the Governor’s assurance, they made it clear that the community would closely monitor the developments. CMUC leaders warned that failure to deliver visible progress within the promised timeframe would compel them to intensify their agitation.

The committee’s memorandum further pointed out that hundreds of displaced students remain out of school and urgently require government-supported education initiatives. It also alleged that local committees currently managing relief camps have failed to address daily needs and that discrimination and bureaucratic delays have compounded the challenges faced by IDPs.

CMUC urged the government to develop a comprehensive resettlement plan and immediately begin constructing temporary housing on identified government land in Phougakchao Ikhai.

While the Governor’s response has sparked a glimmer of hope, CMUC emphasised that only visible and timely government action will restore the confidence of the displaced families who continue to suffer from prolonged neglect and instability.
