Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K. Meghachandra on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government and BJP MLAs from Manipur, demanding the dissolution of the state Assembly and immediate conduct of fresh elections to address the prolonged crisis in the state.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Meghachandra invoked the significance of June 25, 1975—the day Emergency was imposed in India—and questioned why it is labeled as “Black Day,” asserting that it had parliamentary backing at the time. He claimed the term is now being used to distort history for political gain.
Turning to present-day issues, Meghachandra alleged that India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership is experiencing an “undeclared national emergency,” marked by violence, suppression of dissent, curbs on press freedom, and the arrest of journalists who speak out against the government.
He linked these developments to the nationwide Sangbidhan Bachao (Save the Constitution) Movement, which he said aims to expose what he called the “dark side” of the BJP regime. Meghachandra accused the Modi government of failing to deliver on promises related to employment and public welfare, saying the Prime Minister prioritizes electoral interests over the hardships faced by citizens.
Highlighting Manipur’s worsening situation, he said the state is grappling with ongoing violence, floods, and an escalating financial crisis. He attributed the recent electoral victory of Congress candidate Akoijam Bimol to the BJP MLAs’ failure to raise Manipur’s issues in Parliament, alleging they have been silenced by the central leadership.
In a direct challenge, Meghachandra demanded the immediate dissolution of the Manipur Assembly, which remains under animated suspension, asserting that the BJP-led government has failed to restore normalcy even after two years of conflict. He concluded by criticizing the BJP for betraying the people’s trust, stating that under the current regime, “it feels as if the people of India no longer have any rights.”
