A one-day discourse on biodiversity conservation was held today at the Inland Water Transport Complex Hall, Sendra, to observe the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025. The event was hosted by the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Loktak Development Authority, Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt. Ltd., and BeeNet Manipur.
Organised under the United Nations theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” the discourse also embraced the local slogan “Unwind the Mirror: the Loktak Lake,” highlighting the urgent need to preserve Manipur’s iconic freshwater lake.
The event commenced at 8:00 am with a social service programme along Sendra Road, followed by the formal discourse at 11:00 am. Distinguished personalities from the fields of environmental conservation, academia, and industry attended the event.
Key dignitaries included Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of DM University; Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change; Ngangom Sanajaoba Meitei, Project Director, Loktak Development Authority; Dr. Th. Dhabali Singh, CMD of Babina Healthcare; and Prof. Th. Binoy Singh, Head of Zoology Department and Registrar (in-charge), Manipur University.
Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei delivered the welcome address, while S. Bhubon Singh, Secretary of BeeNet Manipur, presented a keynote talk on regional biodiversity conservation.
Speakers stressed the importance of ecological balance, sustainable use of resources, and active community involvement in biodiversity preservation, particularly around Loktak Lake.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony at 1:00 pm, followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh. Participants also took part in boating and birdwatching activities to celebrate the region’s rich biodiversity.
