Fresh violence broke out in Manipur on Sunday following the arrest of a senior member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, prompting authorities to reimpose curfews and suspend internet services in several districts to curb further unrest.
Tensions flared after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Kanan Singh, a former head constable of the Manipur Police, in connection with last year’s ethnic violence. The CBI stated that Singh has been transferred to Guwahati and will be produced in court for remand. Four of his associates were also taken into custody.
The arrests sparked a wave of violent protests. Demonstrators set vehicles on fire, blocked roads with burning debris, and clashed with security forces at multiple locations. In Yairipok, protesters defied curfew orders to torch a police post, burn tyres, and dig up roads to obstruct security movement. Security personnel responded with tear gas shelling, reportedly injuring at least 11 people. A bus belonging to central forces was also set ablaze in Imphal East district.
The outfit Arambai Tenggol, which Singh is associated with, condemned the arrests and called for the immediate release of all detained members. The group has announced a 10-day statewide shutdown. Arambai Tenggol has previously been accused of involvement in violent activities, including the alleged abduction of a senior police officer last year. The officer was later released unharmed.
