A team of the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC), led by Acting Chairperson Kangiam Ktragendra Singh and Secretary Haobam Rosita Devi, today inspected the Old Aged (Destitute Women) Home at Phayeng Kharang, Lamshang, Imphal West.

The facility, run by the Manipur Schedule Caste Welfare Association (MASCWA) and funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, currently houses 25 elderly women aged between 60 and 80 years, supported by 10 staff members.

During the inspection, the inmates revealed that although 18 out of the 25 beneficiaries earlier received old-age pension, none are receiving it at present despite having submitted applications for resumption of the benefits.

On the healthcare front, the team found that 16 inmates are covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and Chief Minister’s Health Scheme (CMHT), while others are awaiting approval.

Taking note of the concerns raised, particularly the denial of old-age pensions, the MHRC assured that the matter would be pursued with the authorities to safeguard the rights and entitlements of the elderly women.

The visit is part of MHRC’s continuing efforts to monitor welfare institutions across Manipur and ensure compliance with human rights and social justice mandates.
