A large number of people gathered today at Yelhoumeeshinggi Ningshing Khubam, Awa Ching, Imphal East, to pay floral tribute to Sapam Robinhood on his 10th death anniversary. The solemn observance was attended by civil society organisations, student bodies, local clubs, and individuals, honouring the memory and legacy of the young student who became a symbol of protest.
Sapam Robinhood, then a 17-year-old Class XI student of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School, was killed on July 8, 2015, during a police crackdown on a public agitation demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS). The protest was held under the banner of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS).
In recognition of his sacrifice, Robinhood was posthumously honoured with the title “Lamjing Meira” (The Torch Bearer), symbolising his role in the struggle to protect Manipur’s indigenous communities.
Addressing the gathering, the Co-Convenor of the Sapam Robinhood Ningshing Thouram said Robinhood’s ultimate sacrifice was a turning point in the people’s movement for constitutional safeguards. He urged the public, especially the youth, to uphold the ideals for which Robinhood stood.
The commemoration was jointly organised by the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) in collaboration with various civil society organisations and concerned citizens. The event featured floral tributes, speeches, and public participation, reflecting a shared spirit of remembrance and renewed commitment to the cause.
