A large-scale human chain protest was organised this morning along the stretch from Kwakeithel to Imphal Airport, led by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) in coordination with AMAWOVA, Poirei Leimarol, the Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), and the Centre for Organisation Research and Education (COHR).
The demonstration, which began around 11:30 AM, witnessed significant participation from local clubs and Meira Paibi groups. Protesters stood united in a peaceful show of resistance, raising strong concerns over what organisers described as growing military interference in civilian affairs.
At the heart of the protest was the recent incident at Gwaltabi, where troops from the 4th Mahar Regiment allegedly stopped a Manipur State Transport bus carrying journalists without offering any explanation. Organisers cited the incident as a clear example of what they termed the misuse of military power and an infringement on civil rights.
Participants denounced the continued imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the state, labelling it an oppressive tool used to stifle dissent. They also accused the central authorities of pursuing divisive policies and called for an immediate end to the militarisation of Manipur.
Despite the intensity of the message, the protest remained entirely peaceful, with no reports of disturbances. The organisers emphasised their commitment to democratic and non-violent means of resistance, vowing to continue their campaign until the people’s voices are heard.
