A tragic incident occurred early this morning when a remnant lathode bomb exploded at Taolingpung, Namkaolong Part-II village under Khoupum Police Station in Noney district, Manipur.
According to police reports, the powerful explosion claimed the life of a minor boy, identified as Kalaingam Pamei alias Makurang Pamei (3½), son of Thuankungam Pamei. The child died on the spot due to the intensity of the blast.
The incident took place at around 8:30 am when the boy and his father were clearing bushes in their kitchen garden within their residential compound. During the process, they accidentally struck an unexploded lathode bomb, which suddenly detonated.
The boy’s father, Thuankungam Pamei (60), a retired personnel of the 14th Assam Rifles (F Company) and son of Gaikhangjeipou Pamei of Taolingpung, sustained grievous injuries in the explosion. Eyewitnesses stated that the blast severely injured him, shattering both his legs from the knees.
He was initially rushed to Khoupum Primary Health Centre for first aid and was later referred to Imphal for further medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
After completing necessary procedures, the body of the deceased child was also transported to JNIMS, Imphal for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Khoupum Police Station has registered a case and further investigation into the incident is underway.
