Over 27 MLAs of the ruling NDA alliance from Manipur have been camping in New Delhi since October 5, pressing for the restoration of an elected government in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13.
On Wednesday, the group of legislators met BJP senior leader and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra to discuss the state’s political situation. Sources said the MLAs are also seeking a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to push their demand.
The delegation includes Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Speaker Th Satyabrata Singh, and several other BJP legislators — reflecting rare unity among those both for and against Biren’s leadership.
Manipur’s 60-member Assembly currently has 59 sitting MLAs, with 37 from the BJP, 6 from the NPP, 5 from the NPF, and one from the JD(U). Seven of the BJP MLAs belong to the Kuki-Zo community, while the rest, largely Meitei and Naga members, have been pushing for the return of a popular government after months of central rule.
