Manipur today paid tribute to Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang, popularly known as the “human torch,” on his 21st death anniversary with silent rallies, floral offerings, and renewed calls for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
Chittaranjan, then 28, was an advisor of the Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF) when he self-immolated on August 15, 2004, demanding the repeal of AFSPA. He sustained 85 per cent burns and succumbed the following day at RIMS Hospital, Imphal. Since 2005, MSF has been observing the day as Students’ Martyrdom Day.
In Imphal, the commemoration began with floral tributes at his memorial tomb at Takhellambam Leikai, Sega Road. A silent rally then marched to Keishampat Junction before concluding at Imphal College, where a public meeting was held. Students held placards reading “Repeal AFSPA from Manipur” and “AFSPA 1958 is a draconian law,” echoing the long-standing demand for its withdrawal.
Speakers at the meeting recalled the brutality associated with AFSPA, citing cases of torture, rape, and extrajudicial killings, including the killing of Thangjam Manorama in 2004 by personnel of the 17 Assam Rifles. They said such injustices compelled Chittaranjan to make the ultimate sacrifice.
At Jiribam, the MSF District Committee also observed the day at the PWD Guest House. The programme, attended by community leaders including M. Maipaksana Mangang, President of the All Jiribam United Club Association, along with leaders of Meira Paibi, JIMET, and AMAWOVA, began with floral tributes.
Speaking on the occasion, Maipaksana described Chittaranjan’s self-immolation as not only a protest against AFSPA but also a symbol of the people’s ongoing struggle for justice and dignity. He urged the younger generation to uphold the spirit of past sacrifices while striving for a future free from oppression.
The day’s observance thus served as both a solemn remembrance of Chittaranjan’s sacrifice and a renewed call to repeal AFSPA from Manipur.
