Manipur commemorated World Wetlands Day 2025 at Leishang Hiden, Canchipur, with a significant event aimed at raising awareness about wetland conservation. Organized by the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur, the celebration aligned with the UN theme, “Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future.”
Chief Minister N. Biren, who attended the event, urged the public to recognize the crucial role wetlands play in maintaining ecological balance. He emphasized the need to preserve these water bodies, citing their importance in sustaining the state’s environment.
During his speech, the Chief Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to protect and revitalize Manipur’s water bodies, mentioning initiatives in Yarakpat and Lamphelpat, where restoration projects are underway. He also pointed out legal actions taken to safeguard wetlands, reinforcing the government’s commitment to environmental protection.
As part of the conservation drive, the Chief Minister announced a Rs. 12 lakh beautification project for Leishang Hiden, alongside an Rs. 86 crore approval for the beautification of Imphal Turel. These projects are part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability and tourism.
In a significant infrastructure boost, the Chief Minister revealed the approval of Rs. 3,300 crore for the construction of cemented concrete roads across Manipur. The initiative aims to improve connectivity and enhance the state’s road network.
The event also featured a state-level symposium, a poster competition, and the Wetlands Mitra program, engaging students and environmental enthusiasts in discussions on wetland conservation. The celebration served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect these ecosystems for future generations.
