Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for an Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Songpejang village under Sadar Hills West in Kangpokpi district. The district-level unveiling was conducted by Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari, IAS.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Commissioner described the occasion as a significant milestone for the district. He noted that while Kangpokpi already has one EMRS at Sapormeina, the new institution will be a “game changer” for the surrounding areas and subdivisions. Citing the success of the Sapormeina EMRS, he said the upcoming school is expected to further enhance academic standards and foster healthy competition among educational institutions in the district.
He also thanked officials, including the Chairman and representatives of civil society organisations, for their presence and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the initiative.
EMRSs are fully residential schools established by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to provide free, quality education to children belonging to Scheduled Tribes from Classes VI to XII in tribal-dominated areas. The schools offer separate hostels for boys and girls, and all staff are required to reside on campus.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari, IAS; N. Shokhongam Baite, MCS, ADM; Hemant Kumar, IAS, SDO T-Waichong; Lamminlal Simte, MCS, AC to DC; SDO Champhai; various SDOs and DLOs; students; and villagers.
