The Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM), under the Department of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Government of Manipur, today launched the first Rural Roots Market at Leimapokpam Makha Leikai Community Hall, Nambol, Bishnupur.
Hosted by the Senmitlon Sinnai Village Level Federation (VLF), the inaugural market witnessed enthusiastic public participation. Aimed at empowering Self-Help Group (SHG) members, the initiative provides a direct platform to sell their products to customers at wholesale rates—cutting out middlemen and increasing profits.
Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, MSRLM State Mission Director and Secretary of Skill, Labour, Employment & Entrepreneurship, N. Bandana Devi described the launch as the realisation of a long-cherished dream. She highlighted how such markets allow SHG members to interact directly with buyers, adapt their products to consumer needs, and ultimately expand their reach.
Bandana proposed that similar markets be held monthly in high-footfall areas such as highways, to tackle unsold stock issues and enhance market visibility. Calling MSRLM a “silent revolution,” she stressed its role in empowering women at the grassroots, promoting financial independence, and giving them a stronger voice in both family and society.
Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur and District Mission Director, MSRLM, Pooja Elangbam, reiterated the district administration’s commitment to rural transformation through inter-departmental collaboration. She said these markets offer an ideal space to showcase women’s skills and noted the potential for SHG products to be standardized and exported nationally and globally.
“Financial independence for women is key. MSRLM is helping us achieve that,” the DC said, urging women to support one another in becoming economically self-reliant.
Members of SHGs also shared moving testimonials about how their participation had improved confidence and enabled them to contribute meaningfully to their families.
The event was also attended by Divisional Forest Officer Waikhom Romabai as Guest of Honour, and Smt. Mutum Bebina Devi, President of Senmitlon Sinnai VLF, who presided over the function.
The market featured a diverse array of products, including handloom and handicrafts, clothing, jute bags, fresh vegetables, and traditional local food items.
