In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a joint team of security forces intercepted a truck carrying a large consignment of cough syrup containing codeine phosphate in Jiribam district.
At around 4:00 PM today, a NAKA checkpoint was conducted by a combined team of the Special Mobile Patrol Unit (SMPU) of Jiribam District Police, led by SI A. Krishna Sharma, along with personnel from the 38 Assam Rifles (Kadamtala, Jiribam) and QAT teams of the 87 Battalion and 156 Battalion CRPF. During the operation, the team intercepted a truck bearing registration number AS03CC-0252 and discovered 1,560 bottles of WINCEREX cough syrup, containing codeine phosphate, concealed in 13 different boxes.
The consignment was seized following all legal formalities, and the truck driver, identified as Maibam Premjit Singh (52 years), son of M. Ibomcha Singh of Nongpok Sekmai, Hijam Khunou, Thoubal District, Manipur, was arrested. The seized items and the accused were later handed over to Jiribam Police Station for further investigation.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 06(02) 2025 JBM PS u/s 21(b)/ 60(3) of the ND&PS Act, and further legal proceedings are underway.
