A one-day workshop on “Transforming Food, Land and Water (FLW) Systems to Combat the Current Climate Crisis in Manipur” was held today at the Conference Hall of Loktak Farmer’s Training Hostel, Lamphelpat. The event was organized by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.
Peter Salam, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur, attended as Chief Guest and stressed that climate change is causing more frequent floods in the state, severely impacting farmlands, particularly in Bishnupur district. He said the Agriculture Department has taken steps to support affected farmers by distributing paddy seeds and fertilizers.
Highlighting the need for region-specific strategies, Salam called for crop planning tailored to both flood- and drought-prone areas. He assured that the Agriculture Department, in collaboration with ICAR and the Central Agricultural University (CAU), is committed to framing a long-term climate adaptation plan for Manipur. He also announced that an expert committee has been convened to formulate sustainable and actionable policies beyond short-term schemes.
