Borun Thokchom’s documentary “Battlefield” recieved its world premiere today at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), spotlighting Manipur’s wartime legacy on one of the country’s most prestigious film platforms. The film has been officially selected for the Indian Panorama (Non-Feature) section, marking a significant achievement for Manipuri cinema.

Produced by Manjoy Lourembam, Dr. Radhesyam Oinam, and Viswamithra Universals, “Battlefield” retraces the lesser-known history of the pivotal Battle of Imphal during the Second World War. Shot over ten years, the documentary journeys through Manipur’s long-silenced WWII battlegrounds with war researcher Rajeshwor Yumnam serving as the central guide.

A red-carpet event followed the screening, where the director, cast, crew, and festival attendees gathered to celebrate the film’s debut.

The documentary presents a poignant tapestry of survivor testimonies and historical reflections, shedding light on the deep-seated impact of WWII on Manipur. It further contrasts the elaborate memorials in foreign countries with the quiet neglect surrounding Manipur’s contemporary humanitarian challenges.

“Battlefield” comes with a strong developmental foundation, having been incubated at the MSFDS “Imphal Documentor” lab in 2022, organised with the support of Documentary Resource Initiative (DRI), Kolkata, and Television Cine Foundation Manipur.

IFFI 2025’s Indian Panorama comprises 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films this year.

In a parallel milestone for Manipur, Dinesh Naorem’s feature film “Oitharei”—part of the Indian Panorama (Feature) lineup—is scheduled for screening on November 27. The film features Suraj Ngashepam, Sanjuna, Sunny, and Nandakumar in leading roles.
