Tamenglong District marked a historic milestone today with the official launch of Manipur’s first-ever “Drink From Tap Mission” at Akhui Village. Spearheaded by the District Administration in collaboration with the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM), the initiative aims to provide direct access to safe and potable water to every household.
Akhui Village, located 15 km from the district headquarters and recognized as one of the cleanest villages in the region, becomes the first in the state to implement this transformative pilot project under the Har Ghar Jal mission. All 78 households in the village are now equipped with individual water taps, ensuring clean drinking water at the doorstep.
The project was formally inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Angshim Dangshawa, IAS, in the presence of key officials, including ADC Tamenglong CEO Kachamthai F Gangmei, MCS, SDO D. Meidinbui, MCS, ZEO N Abonpou Christopher, PHED Executive Engineer Salew Lohrii Mao, AE Premson T Panmei, and VA Chairman Dimthaorei Panmei. The event drew enthusiastic participation from school students and local residents.
As part of the launch, Dr. Angshim distributed Water Field Testing Kits to villagers, enabling them to independently assess water quality. PHED lab chemists demonstrated the usage of the kits, and preliminary results confirmed the water’s safety for consumption.
Following the ceremony, the Deputy Commissioner and officials inspected several tap installations and later visited Akhui High School and the local Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centre. They also reviewed a newly constructed drainage system under the Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAAGY).
The Drink From Tap Mission is expected to greatly improve the standard of living in Akhui and is seen as a model for future water supply projects across Manipur.
